Frequently Asked Questions

Can my child join at any time during the school year?

Yes. We welcome applications throughout the year, subject to availability. Submit an enquiry and our admissions team will be happy to discuss your options.

What documents do I need to apply?

To begin your application, please submit the following:

  1. Completed Admissions Enquiry Form;
  2. Copy of applicant’s birth certificate;
  3. Copy of applicant’s passport;
  4. Medical Information Form, to be completed and signed by the applicant’s parent or guardian;
  5. Complete official school reports for the past two years. If these records are not in English, an official English translation must also be submitted (not required for applicants under 5 years old);
  6. Recommendation forms should be sent directly from the school currently attending.

Once we have received all required documents, our Senior Management Team will review your application. You can expect to receive an admissions decision within seven working days.

What criteria are considered during the admissions process?

Admissions decisions are based on several factors, including:

  • Whether the family supports the school's mission, vision, and philosophy.
  • Previous school records, including report cards or transcripts, behaviour records, and any Individual Learning Plans (ILPs) or Individual Education Plans (IEPs).
  • A student's ability to learn and develop in an international environment where English is the language of instruction.
  • A CAT4 assessment, alongside teacher recommendations, for applicants to Middle and High School.
  • For High School applicants: a willingness to understand and commit to the academic expectations of the IGCSE and IB Diploma Programme.
  • For students wishing to follow the Italian Ministerial Programme, an Italian language assessment.
  • For students wishing to sit the Licenza Media or obtain an equivalenza to the Maturità, evidence of continuity in their previous education.

How are students placed in the appropriate year group?

Students are generally placed in a year group according to their age as of 30 September, as the RIS academic year runs from September to August. Placement is also informed by the following:

  • Your child's age
  • Previous school reports
  • A recommendation from your child's current or former schoo
  • Consultation with parents
  • An interview with your child
  • Assessment testing, where required (all Secondary School applicants complete placement testing)

For a detailed comparison of year groups across the RIS, UK, US, and Italian education systems, please refer to the RIS Class Placement Guide (PDF).

Does my child need to complete an entrance assessment?

Yes. Depending on your child’s age and year group, we may ask them to complete an entrance assessment to help us understand their learning needs and ensure the best possible placement.
